New board makes a big difference for Bruns Surf Club

BRUNSWICK Surf Life Saving Club has just taken delivery of a sleek new competition racing board courtesy of Matt and Brenda Wilson, owners of Torakina Cafe at Brunswick Heads.

Matt and Brenda were keen to support their local club and the great work it does keeping the beach from Tyagarah to north of Ocean Shores safe for locals and visitors alike.

“We are pleased to be able to help a local community group like the surf club,” he said.

“The club members give up countless hours of their time to patrol the local beach keeping it safe.

Nippers board coach Paul Davis said getting an extra board helped with team training and in attracting new competitors to the club.

He said extra fitness for members was important in patrolling the beaches around Brunswick Heads.
“It’s through support of local business like Torakina Cafe that we are able to keep fit, and keep our local beach safe,” he said.

“Bruns is different to Byron, we face east, directly to the ocean and together with the bar at the river mouth the currents on our beach can be difficult to handle.

“But on the plus side we do have the beautiful river just behind the town.”

Brunswick Heads is a relatively small club with members doing an average of 80 hours pf unpaid patrols each season, with one member doing 280 hours on patrol last season.

Despite its size, Bruns SLSC punches above its weight when it comes to sporting achievements.
A season highlight was Brianna Clarkson being recognised as female Nipper of the Year at April’s NSW Surf Life Saving Development Camp in Sydney.

The club also won its team division at the Coolangatta Gold and won the point score at the prestigious Brunswick Masters Carnival, beating out big Gold Coast clubs Surfers Paradise, Southport and Mermaid Beach.
