It’s official – Brunswick Heads Main Beach is the friendliest around. Last week Byron Shire Deputy Mayor Cr TomTabart accepted the Energy Australia Friendly Beach Award on behalf of Brunswick Heads, part of the Keep Australia Beautiful New South Wales awards. Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Chief Executive Officer, Peter McLean, explained why Brunswick Heads was chosen as the Northern Rivers Regional winner.
“The award is not only about visitor friendliness and local hospitality,” he said, “but about the really effective amenities that provide visitors an enhanced experience of the beach. “The picnic areas, barbecues and toilets are wellmaintained and in good condition, and there is ample parking and good access tracks.
“It’s good for locals and good for tourism.” Brunswick Surf Lifesaving Club members were not surprised to hear their much-loved beach had won. “It’s a relaxed place, a small community where people know each other,” said patrol captain Kris Southwell, a view echoed by fellow lifesaver Ben Love.
“The whole beach is family friendly, rather than touristy or full of backpackers,” he said, “and that is reflected in the parents who are in the patrol.” As Meg Quinn, looking out on a picture-perfect Sunday morning scene of a beach full of Nippers and their parents, summed up: “Lots of families bring children and happiness.”
